Applying Methods and Mindset of Design Thinking in Higher Education Teaching

An important aim of teaching is to guide students in evolving their knowledge and capacities. Skills such as creativity, critical thinking and acting out of the box, the ability to collaborate intensively with a wide variety of people and the attitude of self-efficacy are in high demand on the job market and in society. The mindset and methods from design thinking support students to reflect on existing skills and to develop them in self-confident action together with others. These approaches can be applied in a wide variety of teaching formats.

Content:

– Design Thinking as an approach in dealing with highly complex questions and problems as well as a form of problem-based learning.

– A variety of methods that can be used in all phases of Design Thinking as well as a general expansion of the didactic repertoire.

– How students can be accompanied and supported in self-reliant learning alone and in small groups.

– Possibilities to integrate single steps and methods of Design Thinking or the whole process into different teaching formats.

Method:

The workshop consists of taking a MOOC on Design Thinking and a following hands-on half day on-site session at the St. Pölten UAS.

Facilitators:

Christian F. Freisleben, Janja Dörsch, Doris Kantauer, Christina Tanzer, Julia Warner, a team from the fields of SKILL, teaching and university development
